Hon Hai Reportedly to Begin HD OLED Display Mass Production in 2016

2013/12/16 | By Steve Chuang

Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., world's largest electronics contract manufacturer by size, will reportedly kick off mass production of high-resolution OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays in 2016, supplying its largest customer, Apple Inc.

Declining to tell where its first HD OLED displays will be destined, Hon Hai stressed that such products have actually been part of its middle- and long-term R&D project.

In fact, Hon Hai, with ample resources, has focused on  researching and developing OLED displays specifically for smartphones and tablets with ultra narrow bezels over the past few years, aiming to build distinct competitive advantages over existing players.

To that end, the firm will reportedly take advantage of the two existing LCD (liquid crystal display) panel plants owned by Innolux Corp., affiliate of Hon Hai Group, in Taiwan's Tainan City and Miaoli County, to produce  OLED displays, also to  transform its semiconductor plant into an R&D center for such products in the future.

The firm's OLED display production lines will likely be completed in mid-2014 to roll out  small quantities in 2015 and go into full swing in 2016.

In addition to available resources in Taiwan, Hon Hai will draw on its display and touchscreen R&D center in Japan with a workforce of about 40 engineers, to develop related technology for HD OLED displays.

Hon Hai will target Chinese firms as customers initially, as well as Apple, according to institutional investors. (SC)
