Office furniture, stacking chairs, computer tables, and hardware mechanisms

Established in 1979, Iou Jia Industrial Co., Ltd. initially engaged in the production of machinery parts, mainly chassis; at a chassis plant in Chiayi in southern Taiwan. In 1981 the company expanded its product line to cover metal mechanisms and, latter on, office chairs and other furniture items.

“Taiwan's economy grew rapidly in the early 1980s, and a burgeoning demand for offices emerged as many new enterprises sprouted up,” recalls Lin Yu-jen, the company's chairman. “We foresaw a niche for office furniture in the domestic market, and decided to build a new plant in Kaohsiung, south of Chiayi, to turn out office chairs and other office furniture to meet the domestic market demand.”

To enhance efficiency, Iou Jia began computerizing its operating systems and streamlining its manufacturing processes in 1989; a year later, it established its own corporate identity system (CIS). In 1991 it won certification in Taiwan as a grade-A CNS (Chinese National Standards) manufacturer, and was granted ISO-9002 certification in 1998.

Today the company sells half of its output at home and half to nearly 20 overseas markets, including Japan, Europe, Singapore, and the United States. “We manufacture mostly value-added high-end products with various patterns in small volumes to meet the demand of middle- and high-tier consumers,” Lin comments.

To keep rolling out innovative products, Iou Jia places strong emphasis on R&D, and in 2002 won ISO 9001 certification. “We were given a subsidy of NT$1 million (US$33,333) by the government in 2011 because of our efforts in developing innovative items,” Lin notes. “We attribute this accomplishment to our hardworking employees, who are our most treasured resource.”

The company recently introduced ergonomic stacking chairs that can be folded and are easy to store. With their space-saving feature and convenience of movement, the chairs are especially suitable for use in offices and classrooms. (JL)
