Taiwanese Makers Display Smart Lighting Technologies at 2012 Autumn H.K. Lighting Fair
Some exhibitors boast international design awards

Paul-Yu Ind. Corp.
Paul-Yu Ind. Corp. tapped handcraftsmanship to catch visitors' attention, showing decorative lanterns made of paper, wood, foliage, stone, rattan, seashells, copper, iron, ceramic, PVC, polyresin, glass, bamboo, fabric, and so on.
The lanterns are painted with calligraphy and motifs of Chinese and Japanese origins, and Western themes, with simpler patterns targeting children.
The lamps meet some 40 quality specifications and safety requirements, including CE, GS, and UL, making them saleable in over 82 countries including the United States, Europe and Japan.
Home Resource Industrial
Home Resource Industrial Co., Ltd., a Red Dot Design Award winner, displayed a series of stylish LED table lamps and novel table lamps in simple and sleek designs to target yuppies.
The lamps have iron-tube structure, mirror finish and come in black and silver. Three-phase dimmers allow them to function as nightlight, reading light, and work light. Equipped with red, green, and blue LEDs, some of these lamps can also be used as mood lights.
TLED-381 Reishi LED light is backbone of the company's novel table lamps, with universal serial bus (USB) for connecting to personal computers for power, giving off white light and red-green-blue (RGB) colors to create a vibrant mood.
Aeon Lighting Technology
Aeon Lighting Technology Inc. (ALT), an iF and reddot winner, highlighted a 2200K LED light bulb and a CRI98 MR16 lamp. The 2200K LED bulb is designed to replace halogen lamps with its 2200K warm-white light with 90 CRI, which closely matches light quality of halogen lamps and is achieved by using a Cree LED. The company installs the LED in a wide range of lamps, including fog lamps, residential lights and commercial lights.
The MR16 comes with Japanese LED technology and 98 CRI, which is close to 100 of sunlight and incandescent lamps.
Lustrous Corp.
Lustrous Corp. showed chip-on-board (COB) LED packages, including a package covered with domed lens, which help the LEDs to emit more light via magnification than flat lens, as well as eliminating the need of secondary optic lens.
Macroblock Inc.
Macroblock Inc. promoted a unique LED drive IC which enables four-phase dimming in lamps without changing switch circuits. The company is currently the world's No.1 supplier of drive ICs for LED displays, with 65% market share, and the world's No.3 supplier of drive ICs for various LED products. Its forte is dimming-control technology, enabling its ICs to achieve extremely high consistence in light quality between dimming.
VisEra Technologies
VisEra Technologies Co., Ltd., an IC packager partly held by the silicon foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), promoted its wafer-level LED packaging methodology using eight-inch aluminum nitride (AIN) wafer as package substrate.
AIN is 1.4 times better than silicon wafers and seven to ten times more thermally conductive than aluminum oxide substrate at 170-230 W/mK. Also, the wafer is uniquely made with 1,850 C sintering, ensuring excellent impact resistance and also suitable as high-power LED packaging, with each wafer carrying 654 four-chip packages.
Paragon Semiconductor Lighting
Paragon Semiconductor Lighting Technology Co., Ltd. promoted its AC chip-on-board (COB) LED packages, codenamed ParagonLED. The company builds driver and bridge circuits into the packages to turn DC LEDs directly compatible with household outlets. Conforming with CE, UL, RoHS, FC EN62471 standards, the packages are meant for wall lamp, work lamp, anti-explosive lamp, high-bay lamp and recessed down light.
Epistar Inc.
LED chipmaker Epistar Inc. focused on its lighting solutions more than on microchips, showing a series of light engines that the company claims achieve an industry-high luminous efficacy of 100-plus lumen-per-watt. Due to the company's unique warm-white light methodology, which bundles the company's blue chips with its high-voltage red chips on the same die to generate white light, the engines produce 2700K-3000K warm-white light at 90-95 CRI. The company's chip arrangement achieves a maximum efficacy of 98%, which is much higher than the average 65% produced by combining blue chips and yellow phosphor. The company also displayed a light bulb with a unique lens that emits soft light across 300 degrees.
Hong Yuan Enterprise
Hong Yuan Enterprise Co., Ltd. promoted dimmable LED drivers that convert household AC to DC before dimming LED lamps, which achieves design of the control circuits inside the driver and electrical wiring of the whole dimming system less complicated.
Elumina Technology Inc.
Elumina Technology Inc. showed a series of LED lighting equipment, including down lights, panel lights, aluminum profile lights, flexible strips, and waterproof flexible strips. The lamps feature wide light angles, ranging from 80 to 120 degree, and good thermal dissipation, as well as being CE certified. Its panel light is only 11mm thick and 3.5 kg; while the high performance diffuser achieves highly even illumination. Its waterproof strips are IP65 rated.
Clair Home Products Inc.
Clair Home Products Inc. displayed modern-themed LED table lamps and classically-flavored LED outdoor wall lanterns. The company builds its strength in lighting manufacture on more than 30 years of operation in household hardware industry, also being a supplier certified by Stanley Mechanics Tool Co. of the United States and a GS-approved factory.
Santi Lighting Corp.
Santi Lighting Corp. showed off a series of foldable LED desk lamps, sized similar to mobile phones when folded, with the triple-jointed design enabling each lamp to be extended and pointed according to need. Nichia-made LEDs are built into the lamps, which are powered by AC adapter, AAA battery, and computer USB port.
e-Power Induction Co., Ltd.
e-Power Induction Co., Ltd., founded in 1978, exhibited electrodeless discharge lamps. Rated 500W to 1,250W, the lamps are designed to replace high intensity discharge lamps for big-box retailers and department stores. Equipped with dimmer and remote control, the lamps have been installed at Taiwan High Speed Rail stations thanks to high lumen output.
Jiangmen Brandon Lighting Co., Ltd.
Jiangmen Brandon Lighting Co., Ltd., founded in 2003 in Jiangmen, Guangdong, promoted LED waterproof lighting fixtures rated at IP65 and LED high bay lights. The waterproof fixtures come in two sizes with either four or six LED T5 or T8 light tubes, being rated 50W to 70W.
Winlites Ind. Co., Ltd.
Winlites Ind. Co., Ltd. promoted a series of IP67-grade waterproof LED strips that use a unique nano-grade coating to replaces traditional waterproof sealant. The material is lighter than most traditional sealants and does not yellow as traditional sealants. Also, the company promoted an LED T5 tube equipped with a unique light diffuser that perfectly masks the LEDs inside the tubes.
Gigas Products Co., Ltd.
Gigas Products Co., Ltd. showed LED residential down lights featuring chip-on-board (COB) packaging technology, which eliminates multiple shadows. The company has been in lighting industry for over 30 years and works with many manufacturers to meet customer needs.
V-Tech Lighting Corp.
V-Tech Lighting Corp. displayed a series of LED commercial down lights delivering 3,000-lumen warm-white light (3,000K) with CRI higher than 80. The company has over the past 30 years evolved into a pure lighting manufacturer from a trading company and in 2008 added LED lighting to its product lines.
Goldyear Industrial Ltd.
Goldyear Industrial Ltd. showed a series of LED GU10, MR16 and down lights that deliver 600 lumens. Founded in 1988, the company is known for integrated production of LED lighting, able to develop nearly all components and accessories as lens and power drivers independently in its factories, and turn out LED lamps meeting such international standards as UL, CUL, TUV, SAA and RoHS.
Helio Optoelectronics Corp.
Helio Optoelectronics Corp., an LED packager, promoted its high-voltage LEDs for lighting and semi knockdown lighting solutions. The HV LEDs come with remote phosphor cap, whose domed shape enables 2% more light output and separation from LED chips enabling faster cooling than on-chip phosphor. The semi knockdown solution includes power module, light source, thermo module and mechanical components, to effectively make the company competitive in markets with tariffs on finished LED lamps by providing buyers necessary components ready for final assembly.
Edison-Opto Corp.
Edison-Opto Corp., also a packager, showed its Lighting Design Manufacturing Service (LDMS) solution and COB package. LDMS, invented by the company, offers total solution to LED lighting manufacturers, from frontend to backend, such as device, mechanical refinement, thermo management, electrical scheme, optical optimization, and final integration. COB lamps achieve shadow-free light.
Genesis Photonics Inc.
Genesis Photonics Inc., currently the world's No.1 manufacturer of green LED chips by volume, displayed flip chips featuring no need of wire bonding, lower thermal resistance and lower operating voltage when encapsulated in package substrate. The chip is called “flip” for being mounted upside-down on package wafer, with sapphire substrate on top and expi layer on bottom. Also, the company promoted chip-specific lighting solutions.
ProLight Opto Technology Corp.
ProLight Opto Technology Corp., another Taiwanese LED packager, exhibited light-source modules and thermal modules incorporating a secondary lens and electrical driver.
The company's light-source modules include the Phenix 3535 series, Hornet series, chip-on-board light engines, and high-voltage modules. The Phenix modules feature quality color bin and high light output and consist of a copper lead frame package and silicon lens that withstand soldering heat as high as 260 Celsius. The Hornet series consists of high-power modules with warm-white, red, green, and blue LED devices, ideal for color changing applications. The modules can achieve high light output with low wattage.
Its COB light engines are designed for high-power applications, and aluminum substrate enables highly efficient thermal dissipation, also being available for various lamps.
The company's HV modules are available in 140 and 280 voltages and can be used in 110V and 230V outlets. Without boxy drivers or other bulky electrical devices, the compact modules allow lamp makers to be very creative in product designs.
