Taipei, Dec. 12, 2012 (CENS)--AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the second-largest manufacturer of thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels in Taiwan, recently won the Red Dot Award at Communication Design 2012 with two packaging designs, including the LCD/LED notebook PC (NB) Panel Shipping Box and Assembly Slot Shipping Box , both the only winning industrial packaging designs in the category this year.

AUO said that the awards show the firm's design ingenuity, combined with innovative green concepts to gain major international accolades. The Red Dot Design Award, one of the highest honors for international designers, has been recognizing outstanding designers worldwide since 1955, wit the Communication Design Award established in 1993.

This year, the Award welcomed packaging designs to join the competition for the first time.

The winning LCD/LED NB Panel Shipping Box is made of 100% decomposable paper. Small amount of the material was shaped into paper pipes to form a box without applying glue. The weight of the box is 60% lighter than that made of conventional materials, also being 33% smaller than conventional counterparts. The container loading rate could improve as much as 224% to effectively realize low carbon transportation.

AUO's Assembly Slot Shipping Box is designed specifically for large-sized semi-finished panel glass. Thanks to its flexible design, all assembly parts can be adjusted to fit various panel sizes, so that tooling costs could be reduced 40% and lead time shortened considerably by 83%. In case of damage, the broken parts are easily replaceable to adequately increase recycling rate.

Over the years, with cross-domain design expertise and experience, AUO said, the company's packaging design team has been a frequent winner of competitions in Taiwan and overseas, including having been honored by WorldStar Packaging Awards for its original green designs.
