Quanta Becomes Leading Maker for Non-Apple Tablet PCs

Taipei, May 7, 2012 (CENS)--With the advent of the busy shipment season for notebook PC and tablet PC, Quanta Computer has secured orders from several new clients for Google tablet PCs, becoming a major winner among contract makers for tablet PCs.

At the end of the second quarter and the start of the third quarter, several new models of tablet PCs will hit the market. Google will join hands with ASUS in launching low-priced tablet PCs, while Amazon will also roll out its second-generation tablet PCs, in an attempt to challenge new iPad to be offered by Apple.

Quanta has successfully landed orders from both Google and ASUS, making it a leader in the shipment of non-Apple tablet PCs. Quanta is expected to ship over 6 million tablet PCs this year, up 70%, and gross margin will exceed 4%.

In notebook PC, Quanta also monopolizes the contract production for Apple’s notebook PCs. Market players predict that shipment of Apple notebook PCs will grow 30% this year, thanks to the rollout of new models McBook Pro and MacBook Air.

Meanwhile, Compal has also made inroads in tablet PCs. HP will rollout Windows 8 tablet PCs in the second half and Compal has landed the order from HP exclusively. It is expected to ship the product at the end of the third quarter.

The tablet PC targets commercial market, embracing X86 framework, rather than ARM, and Window 8 professional operating system. It features 10.1” in size and is slightly thinner than iPad, as well as a battery which can last eight to 10 hours.

Chen Jui-tsung, president of Compal, reported that the company will shift its focus from Android tablet PCs to Windows 8 tablet PCs. Compal is expected to ship 1.5-2 million tablet PCs this year, for slight growth over 2011.
