Taipei, Nov. 30, 2011 (CENS)--Although third-generation (3G) wireless broadband service is just taking off in developing markets, MediaTek Inc. has started developing 4G chips and is aiming at the Japanese market.
In an interview with Nikki Electronics Magazine, published by Nikki Business Publications Inc., MediaTek President C.J Hsieh pointed out that Japan's market potential for the LTE-based (long term evolution-based) 4G mobile phones is quite attractive and his company will release chips in 2012 supporting NTT DoCoMo-licensed frequency division duplex LTE (FDD LTE) mobile phones.
Hsieh estimated 4G handset market would start booming in 2014 and his company is making an all-out effort to develop the chips so that its chips can hit the market ahead of rival products.
The fabless chip company has introduced a tri-mode chipset supporting TD-LTE 4G, TD-SCDMA 3G and EDGE 2.75G handsets.
Hsieh touted that MediaTek chipsets are not inferior to Qualcomm's. MediaTek MT6573, for instance, supports EDGE and WCDMA specifications with its Bluetooth, LAN, GPS and FM wireless designs.
The company plans to ship 20 million smartphone chipsets in 2012, 10 million more than its goal for 2011. Totally, the company will deliver 550 million chipsets for various types of handsets this year. The shipment increase comes against the backdrop of the forecast that global market penetration of smartphones will increase to 50% from 2011's projected 30%.
Hsieh believed that his company's smartphone chipsets will be quickly flowing into global markets along with its mainland Chinese customers striving to ship mobile phones to Europe and North America.
