Taipei, June 23, 2011 (CENS)--Free independent trips for Chinese residents were formally opened up yesterday (June 22), when 41 Chinese travelers applied to make such trips via the assistance of four travel agencies.

The first batch of Chinese free independent travelers are expected to obtain entry/exit permit tomorrow (June 24) and arrive in Taiwan on June 28 for touring such spots as Taipei, Hualien, Nantou, and Taichung.

Lai Shin-yuan, minister of Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), noted that via in-depth travel and diversified consumption, Chinese free independent travelers can bring economic benefits to a wider range of businesses.

Kao Charng, deputy minister of MAC, estimated that based on a stay of seven to 15 days, Chinese travelers can bring business opportunities worth NT$9-18 billion a year.

P.K. Chiang, chairman of Straits Exchange Foundation, urged local people to treat Chinese free independent travelers with hospitality, warmth, and good cultural upbringing, so as to impress them favorably. Ma Shao-chang, spokesman of SEF, called for regarding Chinese free independent travelers as ambassadors of peace for cross-Strait relations, rather than just emphasizing business benefits.
