TPV to Set Up Operational Headquarters in Taiwan

2010/09/20 | By Philip Liu

Taipei, Sept. 20, 2010 (CENS)--TPV Technology, the world's largest LCD (liquid crystal display) product contract manufacturer, has decided to invest NT$30-50 billion for the setup of its global operational headquarters, R&D center, and factories in Taiwan.

The move will also further intensify its tie with AU Optronics, Taiwan's leading FPD (flat panel display) supplier, thereby strengthening its hands in coping with the challenge of Hon Hai for its championship in market for LCD contract production.

TPV is looking for a large plot of land in Taipei County for the project. The company is expected to brief the global investment-solicitation center of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on the project today (Sept. 20).

TPV, listed in Hong Kong and Singapore, is a major buyer for Taiwanese hi-tech firms, with production base located in China. Founded by Jason Hsuan, a Taiwanese, it keeps offices in Zhongho of Taipei now, mainly for R&D and operation, furnished with a workforce of 1,600.

An industrial insider noted that in addition to its own business need, the large-scale investment of TPV is also prompted by the trend of increasingly large size for LCD TV-use FPD, which necessitates the establishment of factories near its FPD suppliers, for the convenience of FPD transport. TPV will invite AU, a major FPD supplier for the company, to establish factories inside the premise of its projected headquarters.

TPV just announced last week cooperation with AU in establishing an LCM (LCD module) factory in Brazil, following another similar factory to be built by the two jointly in Poland.

The company has also entered similar alliance with other Taiwanese hi-tech firms, including an AIO (all-in-one) PC joint venture with Inventec and a joint venture with Everlight and Epistar.

As the world's largest contract manufacturer for LCD products, TPV counts such heavyweight players among its clients as Sony, Dell, HP, Acer, Samsung, and LG. It shipped 26.4 million LCD monitors and 6.3 million LCD TVs in the first half this year.
