Taipei, Oct. 27, 2008 (CENS)--Client PC sales in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region (APEJ) in the third quarter grew 9% and 12% from previous quarter and a year earlier, respectively, to reach a record 20.2 million units, according to IDC`s survey.
Portable PCs, including the emerging category of mini notebooks, mainly fueled the growth of the overall PC market in APEJ, IDC said, with almost every country`s portable PC market posting double-digit growth over the previous year.
ASUS (Taiwan-based Asustek Computer Inc) enjoyed a 67% sequential growth, displacing mainland Chinese counterpart Founder to take the fifth place in total PC sales in the third quarter in APEJ. The overall PC market, however, IDC said, still fell 2% short of its forecasts for the region.
Bryan Ma, director of Asia/Pacific personal systems research at IDC, pointed out that though the region has not seen any dramatic slowdown in orders in the past few weeks due to the recent financial crisis, Asia PC markets however have been a bit soft due to the ongoing recession, which is expected to continue for some months.
But IDC believes that domestic demand in key markets like China will continue to help carry the markets next year, even if not as dramatically as before.
Kathy Sin, research manager of Asia/Pacific personal systems research at IDC, added that due to instability in the global economy, a wait-and-see attitude is prevalent, especially in the commercial segment in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, the Hong Kong PC market continues to move along to beat the forecast by 5%, thanks to the demand for mini-notebooks as well as the fulfillment of the University Notebook Ownership Programs that pushed the market to a 30% sequential growth.
