Quanta to Promote Own-brand, Innovative Products

2008/09/08 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, Sept. 8, 2008 (CENS)--Taiwan-based Quanta Computer Inc., the world's largest contract assembler of notebook PCs, recently announced plans to re-tap the consumer-electronic market with new own-branded and innovative products.

Barry Lam, chairman of Quanta, said so at his company's recent shareholder meeting. Lam said that Quanta would return to the consumer-electronic market by self-developing sales and distribution channels, and may work with telecom carriers to sell new products.

Industry sources said that Quanta's new products are designed on the concepts of mobile Internet device (MID) and the first prototypes would be demonstrated by the end of the year. The commercialized models are expected to be launched in 2009.

Market insiders analyzed that Quanta might adopt a similar strategy as High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), which cooperates with telecom carriers by supplying smartphone models on either original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or original brand manufacturer (OBM) basis.

Lam claimed that Quanta now has considerable financial, business and technical stability, which makes for good timing to develop next-stage products.

Some Quanta executives said that new products as evolved MIDs integrated with computer, telecom and input technologies operated by touch screen can be designed with various specifications and functions when introduced into the consumer market.

According to Lam, Quanta's established customers have no interest in such new products because the sales channels have to be redeveloped. The chairman added that Quanta could use its own brand for investing in developing new markets.

This year, Quata tied up with Microsoft to push Syspine own-brand voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) phones, and partnered with global industrial computer brand Kontron AG of Germany to push Quanmax own-brand industrial computers.
