Taitien Electronics Targets 20% Share of Global OCXO Segment

2008/05/08
Taipei, May 8, 2008 (CENS)--Taitien Electronics Co., Ltd. recently claimed that it is aggressively preparing to certify its OCXO (oven controlled crystal oscillator) products for new applications such as the femtocell, a small cellular base station originally known as access point base station.

Taitien chairman Song Sheng-tai claimed that very few crystal component makers in Asia now produce OCXO products and his company aims to win a 20% global share (compared with 3% currently) in the near future.

According to Song, crystal components have been gaining increasing popularity in electronic and digital products, each of which adopt dozens of such devices.

The chairman added that the OCXO is widely applied to national defense radar systems, satellite navigation systems, and telecom equipment etc. Currently, the global OXCO segment is controlled mainly by American and European companies, rather than Japanese major players in crystal component business.

Vectron of the U.S. is currently the world`s largest OCXO supplier by accounting for over half of the global market, Song said, but in the future Asian players with cost advantage are expected to grow rapidly. Taitien acquired Isotemp of the U.S. three years ago and has turned the subsidiary profitable.

Taitien has become one of the top-10 OCXO suppliers with a share of 3%, and the company began developing single-chip application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for OCXO two years ago and now is preparing for final tests.

According to Sony, Taitien supplies OCXOs to some telecom equipment makers in China, and some other products to Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent etc.

In 2007, OCXO products accounted for 11% of Taitien`s revenue, compared with 6% in 2006, and the proportion is expected to climb to 17% this year, making it a major revenue-contributor for the company. Currently, the profit margin of OCXO products is about 30% to 35% at Taitien, Song said.
