Quanta and MIT Work on Virtual Computer

2007/11/19
Taipei, Nov. 19, 2007 (CENS)--Quanta Computer Chairman Berry Lam recently said his company is developing a "virtual computer" in cooperation with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Lam, whose company is now the world`s biggest supplier of notebook computers, pointed out that virtual computer will eliminate the need of hardware and with virtual computer users will need only a keyboard and a television monitor.

He stressed that in the future computer will be simply a conceptual service, not one calling for a physical machine, because all users will be wirelessly connected to servers with their household terminal equipment.

Since the connection will be established through wireless network security will, thus, become more important than ever, Lam said. Accordingly, information-technology (IT) manufacturers will mostly generate profits by developing software and patented items.

When speaking of the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) computer his company developed with MIT, Lam stressed the computer is not a stripped-down computer, but an innovative concept, to dismiss talks that the computer is a low-priced product as is Asustek`s Eee PC.

Quanta has begun shipping OLPC computers. However, industry watchers pointed out that the market for such computer is in the air this and next years although the computer is equipped with a unique battery, wireless network technology and dual-mode screen.
